Optional lesson · Affiliate foundations
Affiliate marketing without a website
Choose one audience and channel, check the exact link placement, and plan useful content with clear relationship notices.
Produce a one-page affiliate channel plan with documented permissions, missing evidence and a safe next action.
Prerequisites: Understand audience fit and program selection; the prior Choose programs that fit lesson helps. No affiliate approval, website purchase or social account signup is needed for this paper exercise.

In this lesson
Yes, some affiliate programs accept social content instead of an owned website. For example, Amazon's U.S. Associates agreement includes social content in its definition of a participating “Site,” and its application guidance accepts specified public social networks.1,2
The practical task is to choose one audience, one useful piece of content and one permitted link location. A social account still needs useful content and program eligibility; skipping a website does not guarantee approval, traffic or income.
This optional lesson follows Choose programs that fit. It teaches a channel plan, rather than a list of programs or the technical website build.
Check the program and the platform separately
- Audience
Name the person and product decision you can help with.
- Permission
Check the program's accepted traffic source and the platform's exact link location.
- Content
Prepare original evidence, a useful explanation and the required relationship notice.
- Review
Keep uncertain commercial links on hold; record what happened before expanding.
A clickable link is only one check. You also need the program to accept that account and placement, an allowed destination, and accurate content. Record the official passage and date; keep an unanswered question Unknown.
Choose a channel by its actual link placement
| Channel or placement | What current official guidance says | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube long-form video | External URLs in long-form descriptions/comments can be clickable with access to advanced features.3 | The merchant accepts your actual channel and link placement; the content and destination meet platform rules. |
| YouTube Shorts description | Ordinary URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are non-clickable. Special platform features are different placements.3 | Do not plan a click-through workflow that depends on an ordinary Shorts-description URL. |
| Affiliate content must add original value, be transparent and use links in moderation; repetitive or high-volume affiliate Pins can breach spam rules.4 | The program accepts Pinterest. It is absent from Amazon's current U.S. application list of accepted social networks.2 | |
| Opted-in email, SMS or social messages | Amazon's current U.S. policies permit these Special Link placements under solicitation/opt-in, agreement, brand-rule and applicable-law conditions.5 | Your actual program, platform and jurisdiction permit the communication. This is not permission to send unsolicited promotions. |
YouTube says affiliate content itself does not violate its terms, while excessive affiliate posting in dedicated accounts may breach spam policies. Its destination rules still apply.6 Prepare content that answers the audience's question, rather than repeating links across comments or accounts.
Read the application conditions before choosing a program
Amazon's U.S. social application guidance includes YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Twitch, Twitter and eligible Facebook pages/open groups, with personal Facebook pages excluded. Use the exact public profile URL, not the platform homepage.2
The same guidance asks for an established public social presence and substantive organic followers/likes—in most cases at least 500. It describes at least ten original posts as a rule of thumb, and application review after at least three qualified sales within the first 180 days; personal orders do not qualify. These are review conditions, not a guarantee of acceptance or earnings.2
Use this as one U.S. example. Other programs, countries and accounts may have different requirements. An ordinary merchant affiliate link, a platform's own Shopping affiliate feature, platform ad revenue and second-tier affiliate recruitment are different arrangements; do not treat permission for one as approval for the others.
Worked example: a container-size video plan
Hypothetical plan—not a channel, product test or income result we produced. Imagine helping a first-time balcony gardener choose a container that fits their available space. Start with the useful explanation; the commercial link depends on the checks below.
| Part of the plan | Prepare or verify |
|---|---|
| Audience and decision | A beginner with a small balcony deciding between two container sizes. |
| Original contribution | Actual dimensions, original footage and clearly labeled observations. Gather evidence before making performance claims. |
| Account and program | Check that the public channel, content history and application meet the chosen program's current requirements. No approval is assumed. |
| Link location | For a long-form description, verify advanced-feature access and the merchant's permission for that placement. A plain Shorts-description URL does not provide the same click path.3 |
| Relationship notice | Prepare an accurate video notice and a nearby link notice for any compensated recommendation; add the provider's required identification.7,1 |
| Link and next action | Use the chosen program's own issued link format under its accepted terms. Never borrow another creator's tracking ID.1 |
| What to record | Audience questions, useful content engagement and permitted outbound actions. Keep merchant-qualified commissions and actual payouts separate. |
If permission is unresolved, you can outline the video and gather evidence while the commercial link waits. Do not invent an approval or buy through your own link to satisfy the example's review conditions.2
Put the relationship notice where the recommendation happens
For a compensated video endorsement, FTC guidance says a YouTube-description disclosure alone is insufficient. Include it in the video; match spoken and visual notices to how the endorsement is presented. Explain the retailer relationship clearly near compensated links too.7
A possible notice for an actual commission relationship is: “I may earn a commission if you buy through these links.” Adjust it to the real relationship, including relevant free products or paid sponsorships.7 Do not use it to imply a relationship you do not have.
Amazon also requires clear, prominent Associate identification. Its specified statement is “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” This is a provider-required sample for an actual Associate, not a claim about Affiliate Orchard's enrollment.1
YouTube requires creators to notify it of branded content, sponsorships, endorsements or other commercial relationships using its paid-promotion setting. Use the applicable platform disclosure features alongside the notices your actual presentation requires; a platform label does not automatically satisfy all disclosure obligations.8,7
Leave with one useful, reviewable plan
Write down audience → content → exact placement → program permission → relationship notice → evidence to collect. Give unresolved checks an owner and a next step. Keep the first deliverable small enough to finish and assess.
If an owned site would better serve your next content task, use the free affiliate website learning path. You can also review the gardening program hub for audience fit without assuming every listed program accepts social-only applications.
Put it into practice
Your turn.
Choose one audience, one content task and one exact platform placement. Name a candidate program and record the current official passage, country/account scope and checked date for both program permission and platform placement. Keep missing answers Unknown.
Draft a useful explanation and list the evidence you would need to collect. Write an accurate sample relationship notice and mark where it would appear in the content and beside a compensated link. Do not publish a tracking link or send promotional messages for this exercise.
Assess two proposed plans: an ordinary link in a Shorts description that is assumed clickable; and a Pinterest account assumed accepted by Amazon solely because Pinterest permits affiliate content. Write the missing check and whether the link must wait.
Check your thinking
The plan should separate merchant permission, platform placement, original evidence and relationship notices. A clickable location does not establish merchant approval; an application or public invitation does not prove acceptance or earnings.
The plain Shorts-description URL is nonclickable under the checked help. Pinterest platform policy does not establish Amazon US social-application acceptance; Pinterest is absent from that checked list. Revise the placement or investigate a program that expressly accepts the actual source. Keep unresolved commercial links on hold.
For the hypothetical video, permission and actual product observations remain unconfirmed. Required video disclosures cannot be left only in the description. If you use a program-specific identification statement, it must describe a real relationship, not imply an approved account.
