Compare what an eligible referral can earn over a defined period, then check when that money can actually be paid. Choose products your readers need before choosing a commission model.
Recurring payments can outgrow a one-time reward, but only if enough qualifying payments occur. They can also stop at a fixed limit: GetResponse's public offer, for example, caps its recurring commission period at 12 months.1
Three models, different promises
| Model | What it rewards | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One-time | A qualifying sale or action earns a single commission. Cloudways advertises its Slab option per sale.2 | The approval condition. One-time does not mean immediately withdrawable: Cloudways requires the referred customer to pay two invoices before approval.3 |
| Recurring | Further qualifying customer payments generate further commissions. Text describes this while the referred subscription remains active.4 | Duration, eligible renewals and billing frequency. Text distinguishes monthly from annual billing; recurring does not necessarily mean monthly.4 |
| Hybrid | An upfront reward plus a recurring component, as advertised by Cloudways.2 | Evaluate both components and their conditions separately. |
Recurring and tier two describe different things. Recurring concerns repeated payments; Cloudways' tier-two arrangement concerns commissions earned by affiliates you referred. Do not treat either label as proof of the other.3
Find the break-even point
Hypothetical comparison, not real program terms or an earnings forecast. Both offers produce one eligible customer. Offer A earns $100 once; Offer B earns 20% of a $100 eligible bill each monthly cycle, or $20 per cycle.
Assume every listed payment qualifies and is approved, with no reversals or rate changes. These are cumulative commissions before your costs and taxes, not cash received.
| Eligible monthly cycles completed | Offer A: $100 once | Offer B: $20 per cycle |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $100 | $20 |
| 3 | $100 | $60 |
| 5 | $100 | $100 |
| 6 | $100 | $120 |
| 12 | $100 | $240 |
$100 ÷ $20 = 5 eligible cycles to match. The sixth cycle puts Offer B ahead. If the customer completes only two eligible cycles, B earns $40. If the contract caps commissions at four cycles, B tops out at $80, even if the customer keeps buying.
Use the actual eligible bill, not the advertised price. Text's agreement, for example, deducts items including discounts, refunds, taxes and processing fees when calculating its commission base.5
Test retention across a group
One long-lived customer does not describe everyone you refer. Here is a second hypothetical example, using the same $20 commission per eligible monthly cycle.
Ten customers start together. Over a 12-month comparison period, their qualifying payments look like this:
| Customers | Eligible cycles each | Total recurring commission |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 1 | $60 |
| 4 | 3 | $240 |
| 3 | 12 | $720 |
| 10 total | 51 cycles across the group | $1,020 |
The one-time alternative earns 10 × $100 = $1,000, assuming all ten referrals qualify. Recurring finishes only $20 ahead in this example. Its average is 5.1 eligible cycles per customer, although three customers each lasted 12 cycles.
This is a sensitivity check, not a retention benchmark. If real conversion volumes differ, compare each offer's own number of approved referrals. Keep retention and conversion assumptions labeled Unknown until you have evidence. The examples also leave out payment delays, the time value of money, costs, taxes and changes in eligible billing amounts.
Check the terms before trusting the totals
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Commission base | Exactly what the percentage applies to and which deductions apply. Text's net-base clause shows why a checkout total and an eligible bill can differ.5 |
| Duration and renewal rights | The maximum period, eligible repeat payments, and what happens when a subscription or partner relationship ends. Text's active-subscription help sits alongside contractual termination conditions; GetResponse advertises a fixed period.4,5,1 |
| Attribution | Which customer action must occur within the tracking window, and whose referral gets credit. Text documents last-click attribution separately from its help explanation of recurring payments.5,4 |
| Approval and reversals | The events that make a tracked commission payable. On Impact, pending actions can be modified or reversed during the locking period, including for returns or cancellations.6 |
| Cash receipt | Approval, payment schedule, threshold, payment method and account requirements. Impact checks brand funding and partner withdrawal conditions after earlier transaction stages.6 |
For a retail offer, also ask whether a repeat order can qualify as another sale and whether it needs fresh attribution. Do not assume repeat shopping establishes recurring credit.
Record the source and date beside each answer. Leave missing terms Unknown; a blank field is not a zero fee, unlimited duration or guaranteed renewal.
Choose for your readers, then compare the economics
Start with a product or service that solves a real reader problem. For a gardening audience, a useful seed, tree or raised-bed recommendation can deserve space in your shortlist alongside any relevant subscription. The gardening program hub helps you evaluate that audience fit.
A one-time offer deserves consideration when its approved reward compares well with a conservative recurring scenario. A recurring offer deserves consideration when documented renewal rights and credible retention evidence support the longer view. A hybrid needs the same analysis for both parts. These are decision criteria, not predictions.
Next step: shortlist two appropriate offers using the program-selection lesson. Complete the five checks above, then repeat the example with their supported terms. Use the recurring-program collection for discovery and the Cloudways and Text profiles for conditions and known gaps.

Official pages checked October 5, 2026. Provider examples explain particular terms; they are not a ranking, product test or accepted agreement for your account. Public marketing does not settle every contractual condition.
Text's help page is dated June 2024; its agreement metadata is dated December 2025. Their withdrawal-threshold wording differs, so this guide does not assign a numeric Text threshold. The profile preserves that conflict.4,5 No actual conversion or retention data was available for the hypothetical comparisons.
