Lesson 4 · Affiliate websites

Audit and update affiliate content

Find a stale claim, reconcile its evidence and keep your profile, comparison and review consistent.

By the end of this lesson

Produce a one-claim audit worksheet, an affected-page list and a substantive correction/review record. Run a fictional example that catches stale text and approval.

Prerequisites: Bring one page or a practice claim. SEO for affiliate websites and Build with Codex provide the planning and build context. Node is needed only for the optional downloadable exercise; an affiliate account or live site is not required.

Prepared with Codex; same-agent factual and editorial review. Research checked 2026-10-08.

In this lesson

Correct the claim, every place it appears, and the review behind it. Start with one page a reader relies on. A changed rate is easy to spot; an old comparison row or unsupported “best” recommendation can survive the edit.

Make the page more accurate and useful. Google cautions against changing dates without substantial changes or adding/removing content merely to make a site seem fresh.1

Work through four passes

  1. Inventory

One claim, its evidence and every dependent page or visual.

  2. Reconcile

A supported value with its conditions, or an explicit Unknown.

  3. Propagate

Consistent text, tables, comparisons and shared data.

  4. Review

A recorded editorial decision, checks and follow-up observations.

Google's content questions emphasize original value, clear sourcing and factual accuracy. Its thin-affiliation policy describes copied merchant descriptions/reviews without original content or added value; an affiliate link itself does not make every site a thin affiliate.1,3

Make a one-claim worksheet

Keep the source passage beside your proposed correction. Use official agreements, program documentation or accepted account terms for actual program claims; a directory snippet is a discovery lead.

Make a one-claim worksheet
FieldWhat to record
Exact claimThe value, calculation base, qualifying action and material exclusions.
Evidence scopeOfficial URL or private approved terms; relevant country, account, product and effective period.
Independent fieldsDirect commission, recurrence, attribution and tier-two rewards separately. Missing evidence stays Unknown.
ConflictBoth passages, their dates and the unresolved question. Hold the unsupported comparison or calculation.
Where it appearsProfile, hub, collection, comparison, guide, lesson and any diagram or calculator using it.
Work recordSource checked date, edit, reviewer, checks and deployment receipt. Keep each date's meaning clear.

A page fetched today may describe an older offer. Record the source's effective date when available; do not turn “not stated” into zero, no rewards, worldwide eligibility or lifetime attribution.

Worked example: a fictional terms change

Practice Garden Shop is invented. The rates, source text and review below are teaching fixtures, not a real merchant or an earnings forecast.4

Worked example: a fictional terms change
RepresentationOld fictional recordNew fictional evidence and result
Direct rate8% of eligible net order value6% of the same base.
Attribution30 daysNot specified in the new fixture: Unknown.
Tier twoUnknownStill Unknown; the direct rate proves nothing about downstream rewards.
Profile, comparison and summaryEach shows the old termsRebuild all three from the corrected shared record.
ReviewBound to the old record/sourceRemains stale until the new fixture is deliberately reviewed.

We executed this example on Windows with Node 24.19.0. Changing the facts while retaining old views produced Stale profile. Rebuilding the views while keeping the old approval produced Stale review. The final, explicitly simulated review produced consistent views showing 6%, attribution Unknown and tier two Unknown. All six fixture tests passed.4

Try the downloadable audit example. Extract it and open a terminal in its affiliate-content-audit folder. It has no package dependencies or account requirements.4

node --version
node demo.mjs
node --test audit.test.mjs

Node's built-in test runner uses the --test flag. The version shown by the first command should match your recorded test context; ours was v24.19.0.5,4

These checks compare the supplied facts, source bytes, rendered text and review digest. They do not read a real agreement, establish source truth, approve a relationship or publish a page. The demo's final approval is simulated. Human factual and editorial review still sits outside the fixture.4

Review the page, then release the change

Read the updated page as a visitor. Does the opening answer still hold? Are conditions beside numbers? Does the comparison use the same base? Does the next link solve the next problem?

Ask an AI coding tool to help find dependencies, with a bounded request:

“Find every use of this claim in the shared data, page text, tables and examples. List the affected files and proposed edits. Preserve Unknown and source conditions. Show the checks and remaining gaps before release.”

Inspect that list yourself. A build can succeed while a recommendation, diagram or copied sentence remains wrong. Keep the actual research decision and release authorization separate from generated code.

Record what changed, why, evidence checked, checks run and what remains unresolved. A source check without a substantive edit can be logged as checked; it should not masquerade as a newly updated article. For publication dates, Google recommends appropriately labeled visible dates and consistency with equivalent structured dates.1,6

Observe without inventing a growth story

After an authorized search launch, compare the affected page and query groups over relevant periods. Search Console distinguishes search clicks, impressions, CTR and average position. Those are search measurements, not merchant sales.7

For a decline, Google recommends reviewing longer context, comparable periods and affected URLs; its examples include technical problems, algorithmic changes and seasonality. A before/after chart alone does not identify the cause of a change.2

Record useful visitor actions and merchant-reported outcomes separately. Missing data remains Unknown. This lesson includes no authenticated Search Console experiment, actual affiliate sales or evidence that an edit improved rankings. Keep construction-site indexing controls in place until launch is authorized.

Your next step

Audit one claim on a page you own. Produce the worksheet and propagation list, then record the review and actual checks. If you need a starting project, return to Build with Codex; if your measurement plan is missing, revisit SEO for affiliate websites.

Use the exercise below to turn the lesson into a repeatable maintenance record.

Put it into practice

Your turn.

Audit one claim from a page you own. Record the official evidence, its country/account/effective-date scope, calculation base, qualifying conditions and every dependent page or visual. Preserve missing facts as Unknown and unresolved conflicting comparisons on hold.

Run the fictional download or complete its before/after worksheet manually. Explain why rebuilt views still need a new review. Record what changed, evidence checked, tests run and missing checks as Not checked; release only through your authorized workflow. Do not enable indexing or activate commercial links for this exercise.

Check your thinking

The fictional final record is 6% of eligible net order value, attribution Unknown and tier two Unknown. Those are invented practice terms. Editing shared facts alone leaves old views; rebuilding views alone leaves the old review. A passing consistency test does not establish source truth, real approval or search results.

Your real worksheet should separate direct and tier-two rewards, source effective date and checked date, and identify dependent text, tables and visuals. Use a substantive editorial review and actual deployment receipt. Search clicks, visitor actions and merchant-reported outcomes are separate; missing outcomes remain Unknown.
