For a publisher, the useful difference is what the offer allows you to do and what actually earns the reward. Read the participant rules, qualifying event and reward form before putting a link on your website.
The names overlap. Text's agreement calls an affiliate's customer commission a Referral Fee, while The Spice House has separate affiliate and Refer-a-Friend offers.1,2,3 “Referral” alone does not mean a personal discount, cash commission or tier-two payment.
What each offer is for
An affiliate offer can reward a publisher for qualifying customer activity. Text, for example, defines an affiliate as a partner promoting its services through referral links; its commission requires an eligible, attributable purchase paid in full.1
A customer-referral offer rewards an eligible participant for inviting someone else. The benefit can be useful without being cash: The Spice House offers discount coupons, while Dropbox's friend referrals earn storage space.3,4
These are reading categories, not universal rules about who knows whom. Being a customer does not by itself prove that a link is suitable for business publishing. Read the particular offer's permissions.
Compare the actual reward
| Official example | What the participant receives | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| The Spice House: Refer-a-Friend | 15%-off coupon codes, not a cash commission.3 | Individuals only; business affiliate lead generation is prohibited. Repeat purchases by the same referred customer are not additional qualified referrals; the order-threshold wording is incomplete.3 |
| The Spice House: affiliate invitation | A separate publisher commission relationship; numeric rate, base and cash schedule remain Unknown.2 | The merchant asks for your blog/website name and URL. Its advertised signup bonus has unpublished conditions; it does not establish a recruited-affiliate sales reward.2 |
| Dropbox: friend referrals | Additional storage, rather than a cash publisher balance.4 | The article covers specified non-team account plans; team accounts cannot send referrals. Recipient completion and eligibility matter; an invitation or shared folder is not enough.4 |
| Text: partner referrals | A separate commission on qualifying sales generated by a partner you referred.1,5 | Use the correct partner-referral route. Binding and maximum duration remain unconfirmed here; ordinary customer-link rules do not fill those gaps. |
Discount percentages and commission percentages describe different things. A coupon benefit is not an approved cash balance. Storage is not cash. A stated commission still has qualification, reversal and payout conditions; Text's agreement explicitly subjects customer commissions to refunds and chargebacks.3,4,1
These examples explain the offers, not the products' quality or likely conversions. Affiliate Orchard has not redeemed a reward, tested tracking or established an approved account through this guide.
Read an invitation in three steps
- Check permission
Who may participate, and is your intended website, email or other publishing channel allowed?
- Identify the trigger
Is the referred person a customer or an affiliate? What must that person actually do?
- Follow the benefit
Who receives it, in what form, after which validation, and under which redemption or payout conditions?
For Dropbox's example, the help page distinguishes invitations from completed referrals and describes signup, app installation/login and email verification. Its status guidance specifically refers to desktop-app installation/login; do not treat signup alone as completion.4
For cash commissions, keep tracked, approved and paid separate. Read the performance guide when your own reports are available.
Worked example: a spice-storage website
Hypothetical publishing plan: you are writing a spice-storage guide and want an appropriate merchant link. The two merchant offers below are real; the page, application and sales results are not.
| Decision-card field | Refer-a-Friend route | Publisher affiliate route |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Your proposed website is business publishing. The consumer offer prohibits business affiliate lead generation.3 | The invitation specifically requests a blog/website name and URL.2 |
| Referred person | A qualifying customer; repeated purchases do not create another qualified referral.3 | Intended customer audience; exact customer/product qualification remains to be confirmed. |
| Benefit | Coupon codes, with the documented consumer conditions.3 | Commission is established, but the accepted rate/base, eligible products and cash timetable are missing.2 |
| Next action | Do not substitute this consumer link for permission to run an affiliate website. | Review the affiliate profile and obtain the applicable offer before relying on revenue. |
The result is which route to investigate, not an account approval or product recommendation. Do not take the consumer offer's repeat-order limit and apply it to the separate publisher agreement.
A clearly established program with incomplete economics can still merit research. Preserve Unknown rather than invent a percentage or discard an otherwise relevant offering.
Does “referral” mean tier two?
Only when the documented reward depends on qualifying sales generated by an affiliate you referred. Text's agreement distinguishes that second-tier relationship from commissions on customers you refer yourself.1
A personal customer coupon, extra storage or unspecified signup bonus is not evidence of that arrangement.3,4,2 A recruitment bounty and a sales override also need different labels.
Use the two-tier commission guide for calculation bases, binding and payment questions, or the documented tier-two collection for researched opportunities. Joining, approval and the actual owner-issued route remain separate checks.
Before sharing the link
Check permitted channels, spam rules, self-referrals, recipient eligibility, returns, caps, expiry and the exact reward-redemption process. Do not assume a personal invitation permits public business promotion. The Spice House, for example, explicitly restricts business affiliate lead generation and unsolicited commercial email in its consumer offer.3
When a recommendation has a material connection, explain it clearly near the recommendation. U.S. FTC guidance says readers may miss an About-page-only notice and may not understand “affiliate link” by itself. Benefits other than cash can also matter.6 Apply this to the actual relationship; a mention with no material connection does not automatically need a commercial notice.
Your next action: classify one candidate using permission → referred person/action → beneficiary/reward → attribution → payout or redemption. Save the actual terms and date; leave unsupported fields Unknown. The free program-selection lesson helps assess fit, and the directory provides further options.

Five official offer/help bodies were checked October 8, 2026, alongside unchanged same-day FTC evidence. Dropbox's article displays a September 30, 2026 update; Text's partner-referral help displays October 5, 2026. Undated agreement pages do not establish when an account accepted them.4,5
