Two researched programmes, including Bookshop’s US-facing offer. A scoped shortlist with no firsthand book, device, seller, tracking or payout test.

Choose the reader’s format and copy before comparing the commission. Bookshop.org offers a print/ebook route for reviews and reading lists; Biblio offers new, used, out-of-print and collectible books. Those needs call for different recommendations.1,2,3
This shortlist covers two researched programmes, including Bookshop’s US-facing offer. It is not a complete bookstore ranking. Audiobooks, specialist retailers and regional programmes remain coverage gaps; publisher-country eligibility needs separate confirmation.
Start with the reader’s task
| Reader wants | Make the recommendation useful |
|---|---|
| A copy for a discussion group | Identify the edition, translation and format. Check an existing copy or library option before suggesting a purchase. |
| An ebook for a particular device | Check the exact title’s protection and device support. Bookshop’s protected ebooks use its apps or a browser; Kindle/Nook support is excluded in its FAQ, with a transfer exception for DRM-free titles.4,5 |
| A used or collectible copy | Record the actual edition, seller and separate book/jacket condition. Biblio’s VG/G example means a Very Good book with a Good dust jacket, not one grade for both.6 |
Compare book affiliate programs
| Program & reader need | Direct commission | Check before applying |
|---|---|---|
| Bookshop.org A print or supported-ebook route for book reviews and reading lists.1,7 | Public publisher offer 10% stated · Affiliate Terms use defined Revenue; ebook FAQ says list price. Current format-specific accepted base needs confirmation. 48-hour last-touch credit. Enhanced audience/exclusivity and bookstore rewards are separate; tier-two/recurring credit Unknown.8,9,7 | Revenue/list-price wording and print shipping refunds conflict; exact device fit, accepted regions and terms need confirmation.8,1011,4 Conflicting terms |
| Biblio New, used, out-of-print or collectible copies where edition and condition matter.2,6 | General publisher offer Capped reward · 5% under $500; $25 above $500. Exactly $500 and full eligible base/currency unconfirmed. 45-day window; credit model and cash gates Unknown. Separate ABA-member offer; tier-two and recurring credit unconfirmed.12,3,13 | Exactly-$500 boundary, full base and ordinary cash gates Unknown; seller-specific condition and conflicting discretionary returns need attention.12,146,15,16 Conflicting terms |
The comparison uses ordinary publisher offers. Bookshop’s qualified-bookstore rewards and Biblio’s active-ABA-member offer are separate arrangements; neither establishes recruitment commissions. Tier-two credit remains Unknown for both.9,8,13,12
The percentages are not interchangeable. Bookshop’s terms define Revenue as received or irrevocably credited and redeemed receipts, less applicable taxes, without the listed selling/promotion/fulfilment deductions. Its ebook FAQ instead says list price. Biblio’s Awin schedule is capped and leaves the exactly-$500 boundary unresolved. Confirm the applicable base before projecting rewards.8,7,12
Separate sale credit from cash
Put reader limits beside the recommendation
Returns need more than a “30-day guarantee” label. Bookshop’s print-return help and terms disagree about refunding initial shipping. Biblio’s wrong/damaged/misdescribed-copy rules require contact within 30 days of receipt and prior return-postage arrangements. Its discretionary change-of-mind pages differ: seven days from estimated delivery versus 30 days from delivery, with possible restocking fees. Confirm the applicable instructions before promising a cost-free return.11,8,15,16
Permission to promote is not permission to copy everything. Bookshop permits approved affiliate materials for its programme and requires written approval for edits except permitted tracking parameters. Biblio restricts commercial reuse and copying without the relevant agreement or consent. Use your own descriptions and permitted images; do not assume covers, reviews, excerpts or ebook files are reusable.8,14
Plan one useful book page
Hypothetical example: a book-club publisher plans a discussion page. This is a planning worksheet, not a tested title, listing, reading experience or earnings result.
| Page element | Evidence to gather before publishing |
|---|---|
| Discussion copy | Exact edition, translation and pagination differences you actually checked. Explain whether an existing or library copy meets the need. |
| Purchase choices | Available format/copy, actual condition, destination, delivery estimate and total checkout cost. Leave missing details Unknown. |
| Ebook choice | Exact-title device support and individual access rights. Bookshop licenses personal, non-commercial access; do not promise one ebook can be shared by the whole club.8 |
| Recommendation | Original reasons for the fit, any required relationship notice and a permitted link. Label catalogue research separately from firsthand reading. |
